Helen Thoreau antislavery scrapbook, 1837-1843.

Scrapbook of newspaper clippings, 1837-1843, formerly mounted in 1782-1785 Merrick & Course account book. (Concord storekeeper Tilly Merrick was partner in wholesale shipping firm of Merrick & Course, Charleston, S.C.) Clippings (now dismounted) relate to slavery and antislavery movement. Scrapbook includes many pieces by Lydia Maria Child. Last leaves of bound account book volume include Helen Thoreau's handwritten index. Inscribed on front lining leaf: "Helen L. Thoreau / Concord 1843. / Index at the end."

Lydia Maria Child was born Lydia Maria Francis in Medford, Massachusetts on February 11, 1802. She was born into an abolitionist family and was greatly influenced by her brother, Convers, who would later become a Unitarian Clergyman. After the death of her mother in 1814, Child moved to Maine to live with her sister and began teaching in Gardiner in 1819. Teacher and antislavery activist of Concord, Mass. Sister of Henry David Thoreau. Born Oct. 22, 1812 to John and Cynthia Dunbar Thoreau. Began to keep school in 1829, teaching in Concord and elsewhere, sometimes with brother John, sometimes with sister Sophia. Involved in organized abolition efforts during 1830's and 1840's.
